The incidence of tobacco farming in the context of wealth and poverty in the world

Mankind is very well-known for its particular ability to find and exploit opportunities where there are none. For instance, the growing, processing, and selling of a type of plant with no apparent practical application in day-to-day life, was one of those many great man-guided endeavors. That is the case of the tobacco, a plant species belonging to the Nicotiana genus and the Solanaceae family. After its discovery and further investigation by native American civilizations, its natural properties were brought to light, leading to the usage of this asset for both leisure and medical purposes.

As time passed by, this tradition was transmitted over generations, at such a point that, nowadays, tobacco farming has a great impact on economic and socio-cultural issues all over the world. Specifically, tobacco affects the worldwide community in three main aspects. The two first points to be analyzed contrast both faces of a same coin: the substantious monetary benefits received by people, companies, and countries that produce and export tobacco-related products, versus the impact that these products have on the economies of its most frequent consumers. Finally, there is also to be made a brief description of the health issues that people develop as a result of consuming cigarettes.

Regarding the first point, there is a bunchful of countries whose economies are widely benefited because of tobacco products exportations. Among these, the biggest producers include: China, Brazil, India, Argentina, Indonesia, Turkey, Mexico, and Cuba. Even though there are more countries - like the USA - that could be considered major tobacco producers, the aforementioned countries are those on the top list of countries that have their economies considerably aided by the exportation of tobacco products; according to global financial analysts' declarations over the 2016 year report, these countries have had their GDPs (Gross Domestic Product) grown by around a 0.35%. This represents a very important positive impact, since most of those countries are developing countries.

Nevertheless, it is not all about successful budgets when talking about commercial operations relating to tobacco products. According to social studies carried on in the United States of America, about 25% of this country's adult population consider themselves active smokers, and, based on their allegations, their daily cigarette consumption ranks between 15 and 23 units, which has led them to an average annual spent of 1789 USD per consumer (around 150 USD per consumer per month). Similar behaviors have been observed on Latin American countries and, considering that most of these countries have an average wage below 500 USD, a high cigarette consumption represents a severe deterioration on these people's economic conditions.

Further on, the production and sell of products relating to tobacco increase the incomes of some countries, but this product are damage to the health's people and the environment.
Such a bad impact on their personal and familiar economies isn't the worst part of being a frequent consumer of cigarettes. As it is known for most people, smoking has become one of the biggest health issues in the current age. According to official reports from health departments all over the world, at least 1 out of every 5 deaths are due to excessive cigarette consumption. It is necessary to take measures to control the production of the cigarettes, in that way it would be forbidden the tobacco's consumption because smoking has become the lead cause for lung cancer at contemporary societies, and many other diseases affecting the respiratory system.
